Coupland, TX

Coupland is a Williamson County city in central Texas, with 289 residents in the 2020 census. Morgan C. Hamilton acquired the land in 1859, and his nephew Theodore Van Buren Coupland later moved in and gave the place its name. The Taylor, Bastrop and Austin Railway bought a right-of-way in 1887; that same year the Coupland City Company held its first lot sale. The town was platted on both sides of the railroad, and John Goetz Sr. ran the first post office and general store.

Coupland’s old depot now houses the city office, a fitting address for a place shaped by rail. At its peak, the town had stores, a bank, cotton gins, churches, schools, garages, a freight station, and a passenger depot. Coupland ISD still carries the school connection, serving kindergarten through eighth grade before students continue elsewhere for high school. The city incorporated in 2013 after residents organized to keep local control as nearby jurisdictions grew. Coupland is a tiny central Texas city where a depot, Brushy Creek, a school, and a railroad-era street grid still hold the town together.
