Crab Orchard, KY

Crab Orchard is a home rule-class city in Lincoln County, Kentucky, with 744 people at the 2020 census. It sits in the Knobs region of eastern Lincoln County, about six miles southwest of the Dix River, and belongs to the Danville micropolitan area. The town was named for a stand of crab apple trees associated with pioneer Henry Long Hunter Skaggs. Its post office dates to 1815, and the city grew near a branch of the Logan Trace and Wilderness Road, where travelers stopped before continuing into the Kentucky frontier.

Crab Orchard's strongest cultural address is the Howard Theater on Kentucky Route 39. Built in 1947, it hosted Loretta Lynn, the Osborne Brothers, Bill Monroe, Conway Twitty, Jerry Lee Lewis, and other country and bluegrass acts; John Michael Montgomery made an early performance there at age five. The theater put a small Lincoln County town on a regional music circuit, and its building still stands as the clearest marker of that era. The older transportation story is still close by. The Louisville and Nashville Railroad later made Crab Orchard a station, while the Lincoln County Historical Society continues to collect Crab Orchard oral histories, including stories of Crab Orchard Springs and the resort and racetrack that once drew visitors.
