Cranesville, PA

Cranesville is an Erie County borough on the western edge of Elk Creek Township, two miles northeast of Albion and within the Erie metropolitan area. The 2020 census counted 572 residents. Fowler Crane founded the borough, and the place's current outline remains small—about 0.9 square miles—between forest, farm country, and the creek drainage that runs west toward Lake Erie. Local schools are part of Northwestern School District.

The event that most sharply marks Cranesville's modern history came on May 31, 1985, when an F4 tornado killed three people in the borough and nine more in nearby Albion. The storm keeps Cranesville in accounts of Pennsylvania's 1985 tornado outbreak. Cranesville also produced Olympic gold medalist John Williams, giving the small borough a second, very different line into wider public memory. The borough's small footprint puts the tornado history and the athlete's story inside a very small municipal map. Its landscape is a mix of wooded township edges, farm parcels, and a compact borough center.
