About Crawford

Crawford is an Oglethorpe County city that began as Lexington Depot, a rail stop placed outside Lexington when residents wanted the railroad kept away from the courthouse town’s noise and smoke. The post office brought the name Crawford, honoring Georgia statesman William H. Crawford, and the legislature incorporated the town in 1876. The old Crawford Depot, built around 1848, is one of the few stone depots from the Georgia Railroad and now houses the county chamber. Crawford is a small Georgia rail town whose name carries both a nearby city and a former governor.
