Creve Coeur, IL

Creve Coeur is a Tazewell County village on the bluffs above the Illinois River, just west of Peoria. The 2020 census counted 4,934 residents. Its name means “broken heart” in French, but the local story is less about the translation than the setting: a village of neighborhoods and businesses with I-74 close by, river views from the higher ground, and a separate identity inside the Peoria metro. The village’s practical side includes its own services and ongoing road, water, and lift-station work, while Peoria handles many of the larger regional errands. Fort Creve Coeur Park gives the place its clearest historic and outdoor landmark.

The park includes a campground, hiking trails, and views toward the Illinois River, tying the village to the area’s French colonial story without pretending the fort is the whole town. Creve Coeur’s current calendar is more ordinary and more revealing: village announcements, road reconstruction, recycling events, local meetings, and the small-business traffic of a Peoria suburb. It is a place with one foot in the metro area and the other on the river bluff, where a historic park, a highway connection, and neighborhood-scale municipal work all share the same map.
