Crewe, VA

Crewe is a Nottoway County town of 2,262 residents in the 2020 census, built by the Norfolk and Western Railway in 1888 as a divisional stop between Norfolk and Roanoke. The railroad repair facility faded after diesel locomotives reduced the need for shop labor, yet the tracks still shape the town's layout and its Carolina Avenue commercial core. Routes 360 and 460 meet nearby, tying the rural town to the surrounding Southside roads. The old rail line still crosses the town.

The Crewe Railroad Museum occupies a building modeled on the old passenger station and displays locomotives, freight cars, a caboose, and a Powhatan Arrow coach. Veterans' Memorial Park adds a fitness trail, volleyball courts, picnic tables, and the museum grounds. Saturday music at the restored 1947 WSVS radio station gives the town another recurring gathering place. Crewe's annual Chicken Festival and May Homecoming bring people back through the center, keeping the railroad, radio, and small-town calendar in the same local mix.
