Crooked Creek, AK

Crooked Creek sits on the Kuskokwim River in Bethel Census Area, where the river serves as the community’s local highway. In summer, skiffs and barges carry people and cargo; in winter, the frozen river becomes an ice road used by snowmachines and ATVs. A state-operated gravel airstrip southwest of the village provides scheduled weekday air service, and a suspension bridge over Crooked Creek links the upper and lower parts of the community with the airport. Kuspuk School District operates Johnnie John Sr. School on Mountville Drive, adding a local campus to a settlement whose movement is organized by water, seasonal ice, and air access.
