About Crystal Mountain

Crystal Mountain is a tiny census-designated place in southern Benzie County, centered in Weldon Township near the Manistee County line. The 2020 population was 73. The community was first counted as a CDP in 2010 and includes the Crystal Mountain Resort and Michigan Legacy Art Park, so its footprint is much more recognizable on the ground than the population number suggests. Forest, resort buildings, ski slopes, and the roads linking northern Michigan’s vacation country make up the setting. The surrounding woods and county roads give the place a distinctly northern Michigan setting.

Michigan Legacy Art Park occupies roughly 30 acres of forest and places sculpture along wooded trails, adding an arts destination to the resort landscape. Crystal Mountain’s presence is therefore shaped by two different kinds of gathering: a four-season resort complex and a nonprofit outdoor art park that uses the surrounding woods as its setting. Nearby Benzie and Manistee communities supply everyday services, while the CDP itself remains a small, specialized place at the edge of two counties.
