Culloden, GA

Culloden is a city in Monroe County, Georgia, along U.S. Route 341 and Georgia State Route 74. Its local story reaches back to a rural settlement associated with Scottish Highland, English, and Irish families, then turns toward William Culloden, the merchant whose name became the town's. A post office has operated here since 1825, and the Georgia General Assembly incorporated Culloden in 1887. The original corporate limits extended in a one-mile radius from the central town well, an unusually clear clue to how the place was organized.

The town's old center still holds onto that early geometry. The brick Methodist church built in 1893 is one of Culloden's notable landmarks, and the central well remains part of the way local history is told. Routes 341 and 74 put Culloden between Barnesville, Roberta, Macon, and Thomaston, while the drainage divides around town send water toward different river systems: the Flint through Auchumpkee Creek to the west, and the Ocmulgee through Echeconnee Creek to the east. Culloden is a small Middle Georgia city whose map is made from a post office, a church, a well, and two roads pulling the surrounding countryside in different directions.
