Cumberland, OK

Cumberland is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in eastern Marshall County, Oklahoma, where the 2020 census counted 315 residents. It sits about twelve miles east of Madill, the county seat, south of Oklahoma State Highway 199, and west of a Washita River arm of Lake Texoma. That puts a small inland settlement within the broad Red River and Texoma landscape.

A post office opened at Cumberland in Indian Territory on March 31, 1894. The name came from the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, which had an active mission presence in the area. Lake Texoma later changed the surrounding map, turning nearby river channels into a reservoir edge and giving the community a water connection beyond its old post-road setting. Madill supplies the courthouse and larger-town errands, while the reservoir brings fishing and boating country close to the community. Cumberland today is defined by the short drive to Madill, the highway south, and the lake country to the east and west—a place where an old church name still sits inside a modern reservoir landscape.
