Curwensville, PA

Curwensville is a Clearfield County borough on the West Branch Susquehanna, named for John Curwen in 1799. Lumber helped the river town get started; around 1900, coal, tanning, and fire-brick manufacturing added a harder industrial chapter. The old “Brick Yard” was North American Refractories’ local plant, while sidewalks on Filbert, Thompson, and Pine streets in 1855 and the first borough bridge in 1870 marked the town’s civic growth. Curwensville Lake begins about two miles south of the borough and extends six miles southwest toward Lumber City. Curwensville’s map still joins river trade, brickmaking, borough government, and lake country.
