About Custer

Custer is a city and the county seat of Custer County, South Dakota, situated in the Black Hills National Forest. Operating as the oldest European-American settlement in the region following the 1874 discovery of gold, the tourism-oriented community of approximately 2,341 is served by the Custer School District 16-1 and hosts the Monument Health Custer Hospital locally today.
