Cuyamungue Grant, NM

Cuyamungue Grant is a small census-designated community in Santa Fe County, north of Santa Fe in the Pojoaque Valley. The name points to the old Cuyamungue land grant, a Spanish-era claim whose boundaries and title changed through later surveys, court proceedings, and conflicts with neighboring Pueblo lands. The final grant was much smaller than the original claim and was patented in 1909, so the place name carries a legal and regional history that predates the current census designation.

Daily school ties place Cuyamungue Grant in the Pojoaque Valley Schools system, whose schools serve communities and Pueblo communities between the Jemez and Sangre de Cristo mountains. Pojoaque Valley High School is the comprehensive high school for the area. The old land-grant story is still active: in 2026, the Cuyamungue Institute transferred its historic 470-acre property to the Pueblo of Pojoaque as part of a conservation and land-back effort. Cuyamungue Grant's local clue is a surviving land name whose present connections run through the shared school district and valley roads.
