Cuyamungue, NM

Cuyamungue is a Santa Fe County census-designated place in the Pojoaque Valley, about fifteen miles north of Santa Fe and within the Pojoaque Valley school area. The name is Tewa—Kʼuuyemu̧géh, usually glossed as “rock throw down place.” On the everyday map, U.S. 84/285 and the roads through the valley connect it to Santa Fe, Pojoaque, Nambé, and San Ildefonso; it does not have a conventional town center.

The deeper local story is land and community boundaries. Santa Fe County’s Pojoaque Valley plan places the Cuyamungue Land Grant among the valley’s traditional communities and dates the grant to 1731. The wider valley is shaped by Pueblo lands, acequias, farms, private homes, and the pressure of the U.S. 84/285 corridor. The Cuyamungue Institute preserves a 470-acre historic property tied to this landscape and worked with the Pueblo of Pojoaque on its transfer and conservation. So put Cuyamungue in the valley, not on a city grid: a named rural community carrying Tewa, Spanish, Pueblo, land-grant, and modern Santa Fe County layers at once.
