Daisy, GA

Daisy grew out of the Savannah and Western Railroad line that reached this part of Evans County in 1890. The name came after the postal service rejected “Conley”: residents chose Daisy for Daisy Leola Edwards Miller, daughter of one of the founders. Rail access helped cotton ginning and turpentine become early economic mainstays, and the city’s old core still shows that boom-town beginning.

The downtown area includes the Old Doctor’s Office/Daisy Courthouse, preserved commercial storefronts, and a railroad caboose. The Daisy Depot, on River Street, dates from the late nineteenth or early twentieth century. The former Daisy School has another chapter: the Methodist congregation bought the building in 1949, held its first service there on Christmas Day, and dedicated the renovated church in 1950. U.S. 280 now carries the through traffic, while the surviving storefronts, depot, caboose, and church keep the railroad-era town plan legible on the ground. Daisy’s story sits at the intersection of a rejected post-office name, a railroad, and the businesses that followed.
