Dakota City, IA

Dakota City is Humboldt County's seat, a small city sharing its western border with Humboldt. The 2020 census counted 759 residents, making it Iowa's least populous county seat. The city sits on a hill above the east branch of the Des Moines River, and its relationship with Humboldt is unusually close: the two places meet at the river and have long discussed whether to merge, while Dakota City has kept its own name and civic role. The county courthouse gives the city a visible center, even with larger Humboldt next door.

Local history begins with a town laid out in 1855 and a post office established as Dakotah in 1856; the name changed to Dakota City in 1924. The present courthouse replaced an 1872 building in 1939. On the river's east side, a former mill site now houses a museum with farm equipment, an old schoolhouse, cabin, house, church, and barn. Memorial Park adds campsites and a place along the water. Public schools are operated through Humboldt Community School District, so the town's institutions cross the city line just as the river and shared history do.
