Dakota, IL

Dakota is a Stephenson County village laid out in 1857 when the railroad reached the site. The post office dates from that same year, and the rail line gave the settlement a reason to become a town in the open country around the smaller farm communities of northern Illinois. The Dakota name also belongs to the surrounding township, which was formed from Buck Eye Township in 1861, so local directions can carry the village and township names together.

Village Hall at 112 East Main Street handles water, sewer, garbage, and village-board business, while Dakota Community Hall at 207 South West Street is used for local gatherings. Dakota CUSD 201's campus at 400 Campus Drive gives the school side of town a fixed address and runs from prekindergarten through grade 12. Main Street, the hall, the school campus, and the old railroad corridor form a compact set of reference points. Dakota feels like a village whose history began with a line on the map and whose present-day routines still gather around a few clearly named addresses.
