Dallas City, IL

Dallas City is a Mississippi River city in western Illinois, spread across Hancock and Henderson counties. The river was the first transportation route in and out of the settlement, and the early landing served boats, mills, lumber traders, farmers, and people moving along the muddy river road. The place was first known as South Bend, and its later name connects it to Vice President George M. Dallas. President James Polk and Abraham Lincoln also belong to the local story: Polk and Dallas were stranded on an island across the river, and Lincoln visited the area in 1858.

A monument at Riverfront Park marks Lincoln's visit, giving the city a visible link to national history. The railroad arrived in the late nineteenth century, followed by electricity, city water, and the other systems that made the river town more connected. Dallas City's high school, built in 1895, later became the Great River Community Center after the school closed. The riverfront, old school building, memorial stone, rail lines, and working roads all point to a place that grew through transportation. Dallas City remains a small Illinois city with a long view across the Mississippi.
