Damiansville, IL

Damiansville is a Clinton County village with 564 residents in the 2020 census, near Albers and five miles northeast of New Memphis. Interstate 64 runs along the south edge, with access at Exit 34 and St. Louis about 35 miles west. The village grew around St. Damian Catholic Church, whose parish and school were the principal civic institutions in the early twentieth century. German immigrant families shaped the surrounding Catholic belt, and the church remains the clearest way to understand Damiansville’s layout.

The settlement was first known as Dempter, after a town in Holland. In 1860 Bishop Damian Junker secured land for a parish, and the first Mass was celebrated in the unfinished brick church in 1861. The church was completed in its present form in 1879, with a tall front tower and parish school on the same grounds. Damiansville incorporated as a village in 1977, yet its older shape is still readable: a church-centered community set among farm roads, with I-64 carrying the larger regional connection.
