Darlington, MD

Darlington is a Harford County crossroads village along Maryland Route 161, with US 1 crossing the northern edge and the Susquehanna River close to the west. Evidence of settlement reaches back to around 1700, but the village's shape came from movement: a stagecoach line connected Darlington with Baltimore, and traffic from the Susquehanna and the Tidewater Canal passed through on its way between inland farms and the Chesapeake region. That road-and-water position made Darlington a regional market center.

The Darlington Historic District, listed in 1987, preserves the village core and its late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century buildings. The Maryland Historical Trust points to the district's market role and its unusually strong collection of rural architecture, while nearby landmarks include Deer Creek Friends Meeting House and the Silver Houses Historic District. Route 161 leads south toward the Deer Creek valley and north toward US 1, with Baltimore and Philadelphia pulling in opposite directions. Darlington still feels like a place built for travelers and farm trade: a main street, old houses, nearby water, and a county road network that keeps the crossroads active.
