Davenport Center, NY

Davenport Center is a Delaware County hamlet and census-designated place with 344 people at the 2020 census. The name is literal: it sits near the center of the town of Davenport in the Charlotte Valley. Charlotte Creek follows the northern edge on its way west to the Susquehanna River at Oneonta, while New York State Route 23 runs through the community, leading eight miles west to Oneonta and 18 miles east to Stamford.

The road and rail history shows why this valley settlement became a center of its own. The old Charlotte turnpike followed the Route 23 corridor, and the Ulster & Delaware Railroad reached Davenport Center in 1899. A shared station helped area farmers move milk and eggs toward New York City, changing what could be shipped and how quickly it could travel. The town of Davenport itself was formed by the New York Legislature in 1817, so the hamlet's name sits inside a much older civic frame. Davenport Center is a place where a creek, a state route, and a railroad station still make the local geography legible beyond the larger regional label.
