About Davenport

The Mississippi River runs east–west past Davenport rather than following its usual north–south course. Antoine Le Claire founded the city in 1836 and named it for his friend George Davenport. Now the Scott County seat and the largest of the five Quad Cities, Davenport recorded 101,724 residents in 2020. Palmer College became the first chiropractic school and the site of the world’s first chiropractic adjustment. The Putnam Museum, founded in 1867, was among the earliest museums west of the Mississippi. Downtown’s former Milwaukee Road Freight House now contains small food-and-drink businesses, while a cross-river boat service links waterfront bicycle paths in Iowa and Illinois.
