Davidsville, PA

Davidsville is a Conemaugh Township community in Somerset County that started as a plotted village, not a later suburban label. David Stutzman laid it out in 1831 with Thomas Gahagan surveying; the first house became both store and hotel, a post office arrived in 1832, and a blacksmith shop followed. A log schoolhouse was built around 1835 and still stands, occasionally used by the Reformed congregation. By 1883 the small center had general stores, a grocery, wagon and shoemaker shops, a saddler, hotel, and tannery. You can still see the job of the original place: serve the surrounding farms and roads.

Water infrastructure gives Davidsville a present-day civic thread. In 1950, residents organized the Conemaugh Township Municipal Authority to build a reservoir and lines after relying on springs and wells. The authority later combined with the Davidsville Water Association in 1979. That fills in the modern picture: the old village began with a store, blacksmith, school, and post office; the newer community had to build its own water system. Davidsville is part of the Johnstown metropolitan area, but its identity still reads as a township village with a long service history.
