About Davis
Davis is a Stephenson County village that grew when the railroad reached the area in the 1850s. The village’s post office has operated since 1858, and the 2020 census counted 589 residents. The railroad origin still gives Davis its basic shape: a small settlement along the northwestern Illinois farm grid, with Dakota close by and the old postal name still visible in the community’s history.
Davis is part of Dakota Community Unit School District 201, whose schools are in nearby Dakota. Village Hall and the village’s current notices give the place its own municipal rhythm, while the school district connects it to neighboring towns. The post office date gives Davis one of its few fixed markers on the map. Davis is a compact village where the railroad, post office, school boundary, and farm roads tell most of the story. It has the feel of a place that grew around a stop and kept its local name after the wider network changed.
