About Davis

Davis is a Tucker County town along the Blackwater River in the northern part of Canaan Valley. At about 3,520 feet, it is the highest-elevation town in West Virginia, near Canaan Valley State Resort Park, Blackwater Falls, and the Monongahela National Forest. The town’s name may honor Senator Henry Gassaway Davis or his family. The Herman August Meyer House, listed on the National Register in 2010, adds a documented piece of local history to the mountain setting.

White Grass Ski Touring Center has operated in Davis since 1979, maintaining more than 50 kilometers of cross-country trails, a day lodge, cafe, and ski shop. Mountain-bike routes such as Plantation Trail, Hoo Doo Hustle, and Moon Rocks extend the trail network into the warmer months. The river valley also links Davis to Canaan’s larger road and trail network. Davis’s daily map is therefore tied to the river town, the high valley, and the outdoor facilities that bring residents and visitors onto the surrounding forest roads and ridges.
