Dawson Springs, KY

Dawson Springs grew along the Tradewater River in western Kentucky, where an early settlement called Tradewater Bend became Dawson City after the railroad reached the area in 1872. A mineral spring discovered while digging a well in 1881 turned the town into a health resort, and the name Dawson Springs followed the water that drew visitors. At its peak, the resort trade brought thousands of guests through town, leaving behind a history of hotels, parks, baths, and rail travel.

Today the Tradewater and Pennyrile Forest remain central to local life. Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park offers trails, fishing, paddling, camping, and Lake Beshear, while the Pennyrile Nature Trail runs from the park toward the river through wooded bluffs. Dawson Springs maintains its own K–12 school district and a local library, giving the city a civic framework beyond tourism. The downtown, Riverside Park, springs history, and forest roads connect the older resort story with present-day recreation. Dawson Springs is a river-and-forest town where mineral water opened the first tourism chapter, and trails keep the outdoor one going.
