About Dayton
Dayton is a Tippecanoe County town in Sheffield Township, just east of Lafayette. It was known as Fairfield until 1830, and its post office has operated since 1831. The original town was platted between 1827 and 1830; much of that early footprint survives in the Dayton Historic District, whose mix of homes, shops, churches, and community buildings was listed on the National Register in 2003. Residents fall under the Tippecanoe School Corporation, with Dayton Elementary part of the local school map. Dayton is the kind of Indiana town where a name change, a long-running post office, and an intact street grid do most of the introducing.
