Dean, TX

Dean is a small Clay County city in the Wichita Falls orbit, set in northwestern Texas where State Highway 79 runs between Wichita Falls and Petrolia. The road gives Dean its practical shape: ten miles southwest to the larger city, eight miles northeast to Petrolia, and farm country spreading out between the two. The 2020 census counted 488 residents, while the city’s school connection runs through Petrolia Independent School District and Petrolia High School.

Places like Dean are easy to overlook on a highway map, but the distance between the towns is the point. Dean sits close enough to Wichita Falls for work, shopping, and regional services, while its own streets remain tied to Clay County fields and ranch roads. The city’s small footprint leaves the route and open country in the foreground.
