Deemston, PA

Deemston is a Washington County borough in the rolling southwest Pennsylvania country south of Pittsburgh. Its borders meet Beallsville, Centerville, East Bethlehem Township, Morgan Township in Greene County, and West Bethlehem Township, so the local map is a patchwork of borough streets, township roads, farms, and wooded hollows. The Pittsburgh metro is part of the broader orbit, but Deemston's strongest landmark is much older and much closer to the ground.

Kinder's Mill stands on Plum Run as a three-story fieldstone building with a long afterlife. George Kinder built it as a grist mill on land his family held after moving from Berks County; later it became a distillery and then a dairy barn before gaining historic recognition. Valentine Kinder, George's son, was connected to a documented 1794 meeting during the Whiskey Rebellion. Deemston is the kind of place where a short drive can move from modern township roads to a mill site carrying the whole early-settlement story in its stone walls.
