Deer Creek, IL

Deer Creek is a village spread across Tazewell and Woodford counties, where the 2020 census counted 667 residents. The community was founded in 1830 and took its name from the creek that ran through the northwest part of the village, along with the red deer once said to gather there for water. Deer Creek moved three times before reaching its present site, passing through Chaffer's Corner, New Castle, and Belmont along the way.

The creek still gives the village its clearest natural reference, while the Dee-Mack school system connects students across the surrounding farm country. Dee-Mack Primary and Junior High in Mackinaw serves kindergarten through third grade and seventh and eighth grades, and Dee-Mack Intermediate in Deer Creek serves fourth through sixth grade. A first school opened in 1835 in Edward Durham's home, followed by the village's early store, post office, and town hall. Deer Creek is part of the Peoria metropolitan area, but its local story remains a small Illinois settlement shaped by a creek, a changing townsite, and schools shared with Mackinaw.
