About Deer Lake
Deer Lake is a Schuylkill County borough of 670 residents in the 2020 census, organized as a summer resort community north of Pottsville. The borough formed in 1926, when the lake and surrounding pines drew coal barons and other wealthy residents from the anthracite region. A summer stock theater and visiting vaudeville acts added a show-business layer to the resort years, giving the small borough a history that reaches beyond its roads and homes. The lake and pines still shape the borough's first impression.
Pennsylvania Route 61 is the main road through Deer Lake, with the borough serving as a southern gateway to the Poconos and an easy drive from Reading, Harrisburg, Allentown, and Philadelphia. Blue Mountain School District serves local students. The lake's resort origin still shapes the borough's layout, while Schuylkill County's coal history remains close in Pottsville and the surrounding hills. Deer Lake is small, but its story starts with seasonal recreation, regional wealth, and a theater under the pines.
