Delavan, IL

Delavan is a Tazewell County city on the Illinois prairie, five miles from Interstate 155 and within the Peoria metropolitan area. The city was established in 1837 by settlers from Rhode Island, who organized a colony on open prairie and gave it the name of Edward C. Delavan, an Albany, New York, temperance advocate. A post office has served the place since 1840. Today, Delavan’s city offices, consolidated school district, businesses, churches, and grain-and-rail connections give the old prairie colony a practical local center.

The useful way to picture Delavan is as a small city with a wide agricultural frame. It sits close enough to Peoria, Bloomington, and Springfield for those larger Central Illinois cities to matter, while local services stay concentrated around the downtown streets and school campus. Delavan’s name carries an old reform movement, but the current map is simpler: a Tazewell County service town, a short drive from I-155, with Rhode Island roots under the Illinois corn belt.
