Delaware, IN

Delaware is a small community in Delaware Township, Ripley County, now recognized as a census-designated place. A post office opened here in 1838 and remained in operation until 1933, giving the settlement a long run as a service point for the surrounding countryside. Delaware was platted in 1870, and older records also used the name Rei. The town name may sound broad, but the place itself is compact, set among the farm roads and rolling country of southeastern Indiana.

What stands out in Delaware is the way a modest crossroads can carry several layers of geography at once. The community belongs to the township, the township belongs to Ripley County, and the CDP boundary gives the cluster of homes and roads a separate statistical shape. There is no large commercial district or dramatic skyline to define it. Instead, the old post-office era, the 1870 plat, and the continued presence of rural households make Delaware feel like a place built through steady use. Its story is the familiar Indiana pattern of a named settlement that served nearby farms for generations and remains visible on the map after many of the original institutions have gone.
