Denmark, IA

Denmark is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in northeastern Lee County, along Iowa Highway 16 north of Fort Madison. The 2020 census counted 425 residents. Its post office has operated since April 7, 1846, and Farmers Savings Bank has maintained a branch there since 1935. Fort Madison Community School District serves Denmark now, with students traveling to schools in Fort Madison after the local Denmark Elementary building closed. The community's daily map is a mix of farm roads, a small business district, church life, and the highway south toward the Mississippi.

Four families from New Ipswich, New Hampshire, arrived in 1836 and were followed by eight more, giving the settlement its New England name and an early emphasis on schooling. Denmark Academy opened in 1845, and Denmark Congregational United Church of Christ grew from the same community; the church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The old school is gone, but the post office, bank branch, cemetery, and church keep the settlement legible on the road. Fort Madison supplies the nearest larger set of schools, stores, river industry, and county services. Denmark is a small Lee County crossroads with a history that still sits in its institutions.
