About Denmark
Denmark is a Bamberg County city built around rail lines, colleges, and a long education history. The community began as a turnout on the South Carolina Canal and Railroad Company line in 1837, was incorporated as Grahams in 1870, and later took the name Denmark for railroad president Isadore Denmark. Elizabeth Evelyn Wright founded Denmark Industrial School in 1897; that school became Voorhees College and, in 2022, Voorhees University. Denmark Technical College adds a second college campus, while US 78 and US 321 cross just north of downtown. Denmark is a county-seat city whose strongest identity comes from the institutions that grew out of its railroad-era beginning.
