Dennisville, NJ

Dennisville is an old Cape May County crossroads on the south side of Dennis Creek. Anthony Ludlam founded the settlement in 1726, and the area’s first post office opened as Dennis Creek in 1802. The name Dennisville arrived in 1854, but the creek kept doing the practical work: the historic district’s story includes maritime activity, local industry, and buildings that grew around the water route. Today the Dennisville Historic District covers about 60 acres and is listed on the National Register. It is still an unincorporated community within Dennis Township, so the best way to read it is through the creek, the older houses, and Route 47 running through the middle.
