Derby Line, VT

Derby Line is an incorporated village in the Town of Derby, Orleans County, just north of the 45th parallel on the Canada–United States border. The 2020 census counted 687 residents. The village was incorporated in 1791, and its signature building, the Haskell Free Library & Opera House, was deliberately built across the boundary: the front door is in Vermont, the books and circulation desk are in Quebec, and the reading room is international. Completed in 1904, it was created as a shared place for learning and cultural life in the border communities.

That arrangement gives Derby Line an unusually specific civic center. The Haskell continues to provide library service and host opera-house shows each season, with addresses on both sides of the line, while Derby's Dailey Memorial Library adds a second library in the town. Lake Memphremagog lies nearby. Derby Line is a village where the international border is built into the cultural map and into the building residents use for books, performances, and public gatherings.
