About Deshler

Deshler is a Thayer County city that began with the railroad. The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad reached the site in 1887, and the town took its name from John G. Deshler, the original owner of the town site. That origin still shapes the straight, practical feel of the local map: Highway 136, the numbered streets, and the older center all point back to a place built to connect farm country with a rail line.

Today the civic outline runs from 4th Street to the park. Jennifer Reinke Public Library is at 311 East Pearl Avenue, Deshler Public Schools at 1402 Third Street, and the city park fills ten acres around 6th and Park with a walking trail, campground, picnic shelters, and Rattlesnake Run disc golf. The swimming pool is on 6th Street, and Skyhawk Field sits west of the Highway 136 and Highway 5 intersection for model aircraft and rockets. Deshler has a school, library, park, pool, and open field each doing a different bit of the town's work.
