Detroit is a tiny, close-knit mountain community tucked along the shores of Detroit Lake in the North Santiam Canyon. Sitting right off Highway 22, the town offers a quiet, scenic setting surrounded by thick evergreen forests and river valleys. The community relocated to higher ground in the 1950s when construction of the Detroit Dam created the reservoir, submerging the original historic settlement. Today, it serves as a peaceful home for around 200 year-round residents who value fresh air and natural beauty.

Life in town naturally centers on the water. During the warm summer months, local marinas and campgrounds buzz with boaters, anglers, and swimmers, while the colder seasons bring a much calmer, relaxed pace. For everyday services and schooling, residents rely on neighboring communities down the canyon. Kids attend Santiam Canyon schools in nearby Mill City, and Highway 22 provides a direct connection west toward Salem or east over the pass into Central Oregon.
