Dimmitt, TX

Dimmitt sits near the center of Castro County, where it has served as the county seat since voters selected the town in December 1891. The Bedford Town and Land Company laid out the site in 1890, and the courthouse became a lasting marker for the community's role on the South Plains. The old Ozark Trail is marked there, and U.S. 385 runs through town, connecting Dimmitt north toward Hereford and south toward Springlake.

Rail service arrived in 1928 when the Fort Worth and Denver South Plains Railway reached Dimmitt, helping turn the town into Castro County's main trading point. That county-seat function still shapes everyday routines: the courthouse, Rhoads Memorial Library, Plains Memorial Hospital and Nursing Home, city park, and county country club serve a wider rural area. Dimmitt Independent School District handles local schools, and the library belongs to the Harrington Library Consortium, linking a small-town institution to a broader regional network. The result is a place organized around county business, school, health care, and the long north-south highway.
