About Diomede

Diomede is an incorporated island city in Alaska, perched on the steep rocky slopes of Little Diomede Island in the Bering Strait, roughly 2.5 miles from Big Diomede Island, which belongs to Russia. The native name Iŋaliq means the other one or the one over there. With a population of 82 at the 2020 census, the community's isolation is profound — its school is likely the most isolated in the United States, serving approximately 22 students. The island has been inhabited for at least 3,000 years.
