About Disputanta

Disputanta is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Prince George County, Virginia, United States in the Richmond-Petersburg region and is a portion of the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area. The 2020 census counted 373 residents. Popular legend has it that William Mahone, builder of the Norfolk and Petersburg Railroad, and his cultured wife, Otelia Butler Mahone, traveled along the newly completed Norfolk and Petersburg Railroad naming stations. Otelia was reading Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott. The short version is that Disputanta carries an earlier story into the places people know and use now. That is the local read on Disputanta: its past remains attached to the places people use now.
