Doña Ana, NM

Doña Ana is a Rio Grande community in the middle of Doña Ana County, with Interstate 25 forming the CDP’s eastern edge and Exit 9 providing the main approach. The village’s name honors Doña Ana Robledo, who died there in 1680 while fleeing the Pueblo Revolt. That gives the place a deep historical name before you even get to its later settlement story. By 1846, travelers were passing through the community near the river’s eastern bank, where farming and movement along the valley shaped the local setting.

The Doña Ana Village Historic District keeps that history visible, with Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria at its center; construction on the Catholic church began in 1852. Las Cruces Public Schools now connects the community to a larger educational network, while the interstate ties it to the county and the city beyond. Doña Ana’s character comes from layers that remain close together: an old village name, the Rio Grande valley, a historic church, and a modern highway running along the edge.
