Dorrington, CA

Dorrington is a Calaveras County census-designated place on State Route 4 where the old Big Tree–Carson Valley road still sets the scene. The place began as Cold Spring Ranch, became Gardner’s Station, and took the Dorrington name from Rebekah Gardner’s maiden name when the post office was established in 1902. The road brought hotels, a store, school, stock corrals, and a toll station; later, Highway 4 turned the same stopping-place pattern toward visitors bound for the high country.

That connection remains visible in the present-day landscape. Calaveras Big Trees State Park lies along the same highway, with giant sequoia groves, a visitor center, campgrounds, and trails in a 6,500-acre mixed-conifer forest. Dorrington’s old hotel-and-general-store history also lives on in the nearby Forest Service station and the road to Ebbetts Pass. The climb from the foothill settlements to the pass is part of the everyday geography here. The community is a foothill gateway, but it is not just a doorway to the park: the route, seasonal businesses, forest work, and long-running ranch history all meet here.
