Double Springs, AL

Double Springs is the Winston County seat in north-central Alabama, about four miles from Lewis Smith Lake and near the William B. Bankhead National Forest. The 2020 census counted 1,119 residents. County offices and the courthouse give the town a public-sector role, while Winston County High School and the county school system bring students and families into town from across the county. State Highway 195 passes through the community, following the route that once covered the springs that gave the town its name.

County voters moved the seat from Houston to Double Springs in 1883, and a courthouse square was laid out that year. The first courthouse burned in 1891; a sandstone replacement followed in 1893 and is incorporated into the current courthouse. Frontier Days at Double Springs Elementary each June keeps county history on the civic calendar, while the town's parks, community center, and nearby lake connect government and school life to everyday recreation. Agriculture, especially cotton, shaped the early economy before the lake and forest became part of the surrounding region's working map.
