About Douglass

Douglass is a Butler County city founded in 1869 by Joseph W. Douglass, whose name the town still carries. The founder's story is unusually dramatic: he was fatally shot on the townsite in 1873 while trying to stop a suspected chicken thief. The railroad arrived soon after, with a Florence-El Dorado branch reaching Douglass in 1881 and later continuing toward Arkansas City. Today the Walnut River runs through the wider setting, while wheat fields, old barns, and brick streets give Douglass its south-central Kansas look.
