Dovesville, SC

Dovesville is a Darlington County community in northeastern South Carolina, laid along U.S. Routes 52 and 401 between Society Hill and Darlington. Its story reaches back to the Dove family and the plantation landscape that gave the place its name. In the late 1850s, the Cheraw and Darlington railroad crossed Daniel Dove’s land and built a depot there; Dove’s Depot grew into the community now called Dovesville and was incorporated under that name in 1882. The old rail line put a small rural settlement into the movement of farm goods, mail, and travelers across the Pee Dee.

Today the highway carries the through traffic, with Darlington about eight miles south and Society Hill about eight miles north. Dove Dale, a historic property associated with six generations of the Dove family, keeps the nineteenth-century story visible, while the former Black Creek Baptist Church reflects the community’s religious and architectural history. The 2020 census counted 827 residents in the CDP. Dovesville has the scale of a crossroads community, but its map holds several layers at once: a family name, a railroad depot, a pair of U.S. routes, and the rural road network around Darlington County.
