Downey, ID

Downey sits in Marsh Valley on U.S. 91, a southern Bannock County city whose story is tied to a railroad that crossed the valley. Local histories disagree about the namesake: one tradition points to a Union Pacific director named Downey, while older memories connect the name to a railroad worker. William Alonzo Hyde was the first settler in the townsite, running a farm and store; a hotel and blacksmith shop followed, and the townsite was surveyed in 1894. Dry farming began that same year after irrigation proved unreliable.

Downey's map still reaches beyond its small center. The city sits within Marsh Valley School District 21, with Downey Elementary in town and the middle and high schools farther up the valley in Arimo. City Park holds the Coffin cabin, a pioneer-era building maintained by local history groups.
