Downieville-Lawson-Dumont, CO

Downieville-Lawson-Dumont brings three Clear Creek Canyon communities into one census-designated place: Downieville, Lawson, and Dumont. The settlements grew along Clear Creek and the road through the canyon, with mining shaping the early landscape and post offices marking each community’s separate history. Lawson’s post office opened in 1877; Dumont’s followed in 1880 and still serves the area. Interstate 70 now runs beside the three communities, compressing a long mountain corridor into a series of exits, bridges, and steep side roads.

Living here means sharing a narrow canyon with water, rock, forest, freight traffic, and the Denver metro’s western reach. Clear Creek County’s planning documents describe the area as an unincorporated corridor with a truck stop, gas station, and other highway services alongside homes and older mining properties. The historic landscape still includes mining-era buildings and traces of the early settlements, while recreation on Clear Creek and the surrounding mountains brings another seasonal economy. Downieville-Lawson-Dumont is a mouthful on the map, but the name fits: three communities, one canyon, and a long road between them.
