Drain, OR

Drain is a Douglas County city on the southern edge of Oregon's Umpqua Valley, named for founder Charles J. Drain. The 2020 census counted 1,172 residents. Drain's history is a transportation story: Charles Drain platted the town in 1872 and sold land to the Oregon and California Railroad, turning a valley settlement into a rail stop. The town then connected inland farms with Scottsburg, river boats, and the Pacific coast.

In 1876, the Drain-to-Scottsburg stage route carried passengers from the railroad to paddlewheel boats on the Umpqua River and onward toward Coos Bay. Homes, stores, and public buildings followed the railroad, while fires in 1903 and 1914 erased much of the commercial center. A later Southern Pacific effort to reach the coast began in 1906 but was abandoned after the route changed. The railroad is still the easiest way to read its beginnings. Drain still has a train-station sense of place: a small city shaped by the roads, rails, and river connections that once tied the interior to the coast.
